From National Team Captain to Community Hero: The Inspiring Journey of Coach Adams "Adeh" Ewoton

In the remote village of Soweto near Lodwar in Kenya's Turkana County, a former national team captain is quietly changing lives through football. This is the story of Coach Adams Ewoton – known affectionately as "Adeh" for his towering presence reminiscent of Togolese football star Emmanuel Adebayor – and how he's building hope in one of Kenya's most overlooked regions.

From National Glory to Grassroots Impact

Adams Ewoton's football journey began like many talented young Kenyans – with raw talent and big dreams. His skill and leadership qualities quickly became evident as he rose through the ranks to captain Kenya's U17 National Team. His international career continued with appearances for both the U20 and U23 national teams, showcasing his abilities on continental stages.

His talent eventually took him beyond Kenya's borders to Norway, where he played professionally for Brumunddal FK. But even as he competed at higher levels, something pulled at his heart – the knowledge that back home, countless talented children lacked the opportunities he had been fortunate enough to receive.

Building the Turkana Warriors Soccer Academy

When his playing days concluded, Coach Adams made a decision that would define his legacy far beyond his achievements on the pitch. Rather than seeking coaching opportunities in comfortable urban settings, he returned to one of Kenya's most remote and challenging regions – Turkana County.

In the small village of Soweto near Lodwar, he founded the Turkana Warriors Soccer Academy. What began as a small initiative has blossomed into a comprehensive program that now includes:

  • 90 boys and young men from U13 to senior level
  • 60 girls actively participating and developing their skills
  • Academic support and educational guidance
  • Life skills and mentorship

All of this has been accomplished without any external support or funding – a testament to Coach Adams' determination and resourcefulness in an area where resources are scarce.

More Than a Coach

"Football and education go together," Coach Adams emphasizes when describing his philosophy. But his role extends far beyond teaching football techniques or monitoring academic progress.

"Depending on the day, I am a coach, mentor, disciplinarian, educator, and father figure," he explains. "The responsibility is a big one because of the needs in the community."

Perhaps nothing illustrates this commitment more powerfully than his decision to take in five orphans he discovered playing football on the streets. Not content to simply include them in training sessions, Coach Adams ensured they had a home, enrolled them in school, and integrated them into the academy – providing the stability and opportunity they desperately needed.

Creating Opportunity in Challenging Circumstances

Turkana County remains one of Kenya's most marginalized regions, facing challenges from climate change, resource scarcity, and limited infrastructure. In this environment, Coach Adams' academy serves as a beacon of hope and possibility.

Without any outside assistance to date, he has managed to maintain regular training sessions, organize local competitions, and keep children engaged in both sport and education. The impact extends beyond football skills – he's building resilience, discipline, and ambition in young people who might otherwise have limited pathways to success.
