In the heart of Kenya, where passion for football runs deep despite limited resources, a remarkable story is unfolding. The FTBLRLIFE team recently returned from an extraordinary journey to Kenya, where we unveiled the Madira Soccer Assassins kit, connected with inspiring academies, and witnessed firsthand the transformative power of football in communities across the country.
A Historic Kit Unveiling
The centerpiece of our trip was the official Madira Soccer Assassins kit unveiling on July 12th at KCB Bank in Nairobi. This wasn't just any kit launch—it represented the first women's football kit from East Africa available for global purchase, creating a sustainable model to support this groundbreaking team.
The event drew significant attention, with coverage on national television stations across Kenya. We were honored to be joined by distinguished guests including Dr. Wilber K. Ottichilo, Governor of Vihiga County; Ababu Namwamba, Kenya UNEP Representative and Former Cabinet Secretary; and Harold Ndege, CEO of the Football Kenya Federation.
Most importantly, the Madira Soccer Assassins themselves attended, bringing their infectious energy and reminding everyone why this initiative matters so much. These young women, who have broken barriers to become the first high school team in Kenya's Women's Premier League, embody the spirit of determination and excellence that inspires our mission.
A Star-Studded Team
For this momentous trip, we brought along Olympic bronze medalist and former professional player Lauren Sesselmann, whose presence created an immediate connection with the young players. Her experience and humble approach resonated deeply with everyone she met, especially the Assassins.
"Having Lauren Sesselmann there really allowed us to better connect with everyone, especially the Assassins team," noted David Clarke, Founder of FTBLRLIFE. "Her experience and humility really won over everyone."
We also traveled with Aaron Straight from Soulcraft Allstars, who captured the entire journey for an upcoming documentary that will share the Assassins' story with the world.
Grassroots Connections
Our journey extended far beyond Nairobi, taking us to several remarkable academies that are changing lives through football:
Nakuru City Football Academy in Nakuru was our first stop, where we witnessed passionate young players developing their skills despite limited resources.
Madira High School gave us the privilege of watching the Madira Soccer Assassins train and meeting the dedicated staff and students who support them. The school's commitment to both athletic and academic excellence was evident in every interaction.
Mesa Mighty Eagles in Kitale, led by the inspirational Moses Zewedi, rounded out our tour of western Kenya. This famous academy has been a beacon of hope and opportunity for countless young players.
True Story: We visited the Mesa Mighty Eagles on Thursday, they were scheduled to travel to Europe for a tournament on Sunday and after 8 months of preparation and lots of stress did not have the funds secured for their flights the day we visited. We were concerned but did not get any news that day. When I arrived for my flight to Frankfurt, Germany, who was sitting at my gate! Yes, the Mesa Mighty Eagles. What a reunion. #footballchangeslives
Discovering Tomorrow's Stars
While in western Kenya, we traveled to Kisumu near the shores of Lake Victoria where Marti Torres and New Hera Interconnection led trials at Moi Stadium. Young female players from across the region showcased their talents, demonstrating the depth of untapped potential in Kenyan women's football.
Back in Nairobi, we partnered again with Marti Torres and New Hera Interconnection to conduct another trial focused on identifying exceptional talent. The standout performer was Golan Oliech Odiwour, a talented goalkeeper who earned the opportunity to travel to Spain for a professional trial. We're excited to follow his journey as he takes this life-changing step.
Mission in Action
This trip embodied everything FTBLRLIFE stands for—connecting global football while organizing, supporting, and bringing visibility to grassroots programs.
"It was a great success—the kit unveil, the trials, visiting the great academies, and seeing all our old friends and the incredible talent," reflected Clarke. "This trip really showed that connecting football in one community to focus on organizing, supporting, and bringing visibility is the right approach."
Working alongside partners like New Hera Interconnection, represented by Marti Torres and Simiyuh Ignatius, and the Madira Soccer Assassins' own Alex Alumirah, we witnessed the power of collaboration across borders and organizations.
Looking Forward
As we return home, we carry with us countless stories, connections, and renewed determination to support grassroots football globally. The Madira Soccer Assassins kit is now available worldwide, creating a sustainable funding model for this remarkable team.
"We are really looking forward to heading back soon and telling the Assassins story globally," Clarke added. "This is just the beginning of what we can accomplish together."
Through initiatives like Kits with a Purpose and our global football community, we're breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for talented players everywhere. The Madira Soccer Assassins are just one example of how football truly changes lives when given the right support and visibility.
