From Dreams to History: The Madira Soccer Assassins Story

From Dreams to History: The Madira Soccer Assassins Story

In Kenya's Premier League, where seasoned professionals battle for supremacy, an extraordinary team of teenage girls is rewriting the rulebook. With their oldest player just 19 years old, the Madira Soccer Assassins aren't just competing – they're thriving against adult professionals twice their age.

When Valerie Nekesa first stepped onto the dusty fields of Vihiga County, Kenya, she wasn't just playing football – she was defying expectations. Like many girls in her community, she faced a future limited by traditional barriers and economic challenges. But through the Madira Soccer Assassins, she found more than a team; she found a pathway to her dreams.

Teenagers Taking on the Pros

Let that sink in: a high school team, with players aged 14-19, competing in Kenya's top women's professional league. It's like watching a high school team play in the NWSL – and holding their own. This isn't just breaking barriers; it's shattering them.

"When we first entered the league, other teams underestimated us," Coach Alex Alumirah recalls. "They saw schoolgirls. Now they see champions in the making."

A Revolution in Cleats

Founded in 2018 at Madira Girls' High School, the Soccer Assassins began as more than just a football team. In a region where young girls often faced early marriage, gang recruitment, and limited opportunities, coach Alumirah saw football as a tool for transformation.

Their impact has been extraordinary:

  • Over 200 girls on academic and athletic scholarships
  • 20+ youth national team call-ups
  • 5 players selected for Kenya's 2024 U-17 World Cup squad
  • The first high school team ever to compete in Kenya's Women's Premier League

Making History

No moment better captures their journey than Valerie Nekesa's historic goal against Mexico in the 2024 U-17 World Cup – the first World Cup goal ever scored by a Kenyan woman. At just 16 years old, Valerie wasn't just scoring goals; she was inspiring a nation.

"That goal wasn't just for me," Valerie says. "It was for every girl back home who's been told she can't play football. Now they know they can."
